Today is “Read a Child a Book You Like Day?” This day
celebrates the birthday (1856) of Kate Douglas Wiggin, author
of “Rebecca at Sunnybrook Farm” and other wonderful children’s
stories. Let’s all try to read a book to a child today.
Wiggin was presented with an honorary degree by Bowdoin College (in 1904) and shortly thereafter, she founded the Society of Bowdoin Women, a social and fundraising organization.
The Society of Bowdoin Women was formed in 1922 to provide “an organization in which those with a common bond of Bowdoin loyalty may, by becoming better acquainted with the College and with each other, work together to serve the College.” (From the Bowdoin College web site.)
The Kate Douglas Wiggin Collection, is housed in the Special Collections & Archives of the Bowdoin College Library.
